22/30-30 Improved
Historical Notes:
This is another P.O. Ackley innovation, and is the full length 30-30
Winchester case necked down and fire-formed to produce minimum body taper
and a 40 degree shoulder characteristic of the Ackley improved line of
cartridges. It originated in the late 1940's and is similar to the 219 Zipper
Improved, but has greater case capacity and develops higher velocities. The
22/30-30 Improved has been used in single shot, bolt action, and lever action
rifles. It works quiet well in the older Model 99 Savage lever action rifles
with the rotary magazine. It was fairly popular in the 1940's and through the
1950's/ There are several versions of the 22/30-30, some of the more recent ones
use a shortened case, the length depending on who originated it.
General Comments:
The 22/30-30 Improved is in the same class as the 22-250
and is an excellent long range varmint cartridge. It also has a reputation for
match level accuracy. It is a good choice for single shot rifles or bolt actions
made to handle rimmed cartridges. One reason for the development of the 22/30-30
was that post World War I 219 Zipper brass, used in forming the 219 Zipper
Improved would split in the shoulder area when fire-formed. The 30-30
case didn't do this, but required a set of forming dies when used for the 219
Improved. The 22/30-30 cases could be made by fire-forming, thus eliminating
this problem. Many shooters, therefore, feel it is also a better cartridge.
